De complete uitleg voor kartvlaggen: Betekenis en gebruik

In karting, flags are essential communication tools between race officials and drivers. Each flag has a specific meaning, and it's crucial that every karter understands these signals for a safe and fair race. In this comprehensive guide, we discuss all official karting flags and their meanings.

The official karting flags

🏁 Black and white checkered flag

The most iconic flag in motorsports! This flag signals the end of the race or session. When the winner sees this flag, the race is officially over, and you can then proceed to the pit lane.

🟢 Green flag

The green flag marks the start of the race or the restart of the race after a neutralization. This is the signal for drivers to go full throttle again! This is usually only permitted after the green flag has been reached.

🟡 Yellow flag

Warning of danger on the track. When a yellow flag is displayed, drivers must drive cautiously, refrain from overtaking, and be prepared to stop. There are two variations:

  • Single yellow flag: Local danger
  • Double yellow flag: Serious danger, use extra caution

In some races/events the driver must hold up one hand to show that he is slowing down and has seen the yellow flag.

🔴 Red flag

Stop racing immediately! The red flag means the race is stopped due to serious danger. All drivers must stop immediately at the start/finish line, in the pit lane, or wherever it is safe.

⚫ Black flag

Disqualification. When a driver receives the black flag (often with a race number), they must immediately pit and are disqualified. Please report this to race management or track staff.

⚫🟠 Black and orange flag

A (mechanical) problem has been detected. The driver must return to the pits for an inspection of his kart. In motorsport, this is called the meatball flag. Continuing to drive with problems can create dangerous situations for the driver himself and for others on or off the track, so avoid this at all costs.

🔵 Blue Flag

Let faster drivers pass. This flag is displayed to slower drivers who are about to be overtaken by faster drivers. Try to maintain your racing line, but remember to cause as little inconvenience as possible to the faster driver.

⚪ White flag

Slow vehicle on the track. This could be an ambulance, tow truck, or official vehicle. Drive carefully and be prepared for obstacles.

🟡🔴 Yellow and red striped flag

Changing track conditions. This can mean the track becomes slippery due to oil, rain, or other factors that affect grip. So drive carefully and be aware of changes in grip.

Regional variations

While most flags are internationally standardized, there may be slight variations between different karting organizations or karting tracks. Always check the specific rules of your local karting track or competition. Not all flags are used everywhere.

Safety first

Understanding flag signals is important not only for fair sporting practices but especially for the safety of all participants. Never ignore a flag signal; it can save lives. Everyone kart-goes for their own enjoyment, so keep this in mind.
