Karting in the rain: the challenge of a fogged-up visor

Rain during a karting session is inevitable, and a fogged-up visor can seriously affect your vision and performance. Fortunately, there are several ways to prevent karting helmet and visor optimal, even in wet conditions. In this blog post, we share practical tips for before, during, and after karting in the rain.

Preventing your visor from fogging up: effective solutions

1. Double visor system: the most effective solution

A dual-visor system is by far the best investment against visor fog. There are several systems on the market, each with its own characteristics:

Pinlock system

It Pinlock system Popular with brands like LS2, this is a clear lens that attaches to the inside of your visor with small pins. The Pinlock lens creates an insulating layer of air between the two layers and absorbs moisture, effectively preventing condensation.

Advantages of Pinlock:

  • Continues to work effectively, even during prolonged rain
  • No chemicals needed
  • Replaceable (replace annually for optimal performance)
  • Widely available for many helmet brands

Dual Pane vizier

Brands like Bell and FK Visors often use a dual pane visorThis is a complete visor with two layers that are already factory-assembled. The principle is similar to Pinlock—an insulating layer of air between the two layers prevents condensation, but the entire visor is a single piece.

Benefits of Dual Pane:

  • Integrated system, no loose parts
  • Very effective against fogging
  • No installation required, simply replace like a normal visor
  • Optimally matched to the specific helmet

Anti-fog visor

Some sights, such as those of Arai and Zamp, have a special coating on the inside that prevents condensation. This coating absorbs moisture and prevents drips from forming on the visor.

Benefits of anti-fog visors:

  • Easy to use, no extra parts
  • Lighter than double visor systems
  • Effective in normal to moderate conditions

NB: The coating on anti-fog visors can become less effective over time and is more sensitive to improper cleaning. Never use harsh cleaning agents on these visors.

2. Anti-fog spray: additional solution for the inside

A anti-fog visor spray apply to the inside of your visor to prevent fogging. This is a good addition to the systems mentioned above or a temporary solution if you don't yet have a double visor. The spray forms an invisible layer that absorbs moisture and prevents condensation.

Tips for use:

  • Apply the spray to a clean, dry visor (inside only)
  • Allow the product to dry completely before use
  • Reapply after each session for optimal results.
  • Ideal as extra protection in extreme conditions
  • Do not use on visors with anti-fog coating (may damage the coating)

3. Water-repellent treatment: for the outside

While anti-fog spray the inside protects against fogging, you can exterior Treat your visor with a water-repellent coating. This ensures that raindrops flow off more quickly instead of sticking, significantly improving your visibility in rain.

Difference between anti-fog and water-repellent:

  • Anti-fog (inside): Prevents your visor from fogging up due to your breath and sweat
  • Water-repellent (outside): Let raindrops run off faster for better visibility

Some visors already have a water-repellent treatment, but this wears off over time. You can use special water-repellent sprays to restore this.

4. Visor slightly open: natural ventilation

Opening your visor slightly allows air to circulate and reduces condensation. This works especially well in light rain or drizzle. In heavy rain, this is less practical due to spray.

5. Use optimal helmet ventilation

Modern karting helmets such as the Arai GP-7 have advanced ventilation systems. Make sure all vents are open to maximize air circulation. This helps remove moist air and prevents condensation.

The role of a balaclava in rainy weather

A balaclava is not only important for safety (FIA requirement in competitions), but also plays a crucial role in preventing visors from fogging up.

Why a balaclava helps prevent fogging:

  • Moisture absorption: A balaclava absorbs sweat and breath before it reaches your visor
  • Temperature regulation: Helps keep your head warm, which reduces temperature differences with the visor
  • Breathing direction: Diverts your breath away from the visor
  • Hygiene: Keep your helmet cleaner, especially important in wet weather

In rainy weather, choose a thin, breathable balaclava that wicks away moisture effectively. Materials like Nomex or special synthetic fibers work best. Alpinestars ZX Evo V2 balaclava for example, is FIA certified and offers excellent moisture regulation.

After the session: dry and clean the helmet and visor thoroughly

Proper maintenance after a wet session is crucial for the longevity of your helmet and the effectiveness of anti-fog systems.

Step 1: Immediately after the session

  • Remove the visor or open it for better airflow
  • Shake excess water from the helmet
  • Gently pat the inside dry with an absorbent towel
  • Remove the balaclava and let it dry separately

Step 2: Cleaning

Use a specialized product such as the Muc-Off helmet care kit for optimal cleaning:

  • Visor outside: Clean with special visor cleaner
  • Visor inside: Use only water and a soft cloth, especially with anti-condensation coatings
  • Inside helmet: Remove removable inner linings and wash according to instructions (often hand wash in lukewarm water)
  • Outside of helmet: Wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild cleaner
  • Pinlock lens: Clean gently with water, do not use chemicals that may damage the coating
  • Dual pane visors: Clean only with water and a soft cloth, do not use chemicals

Important: Never use alcohol, glass cleaner, ammonia-based products, or other harsh agents on the inside of your visor. These can damage anti-fog coatings, Pinlock lenses, and dual-pane visors. You can use mild cleaning agents on the outside.

Step 3: Dry correctly

What you MUST do:

  • Let the helmet dry at room temperature in a well-ventilated area
  • Place the helmet with the opening facing down on a towel or helmet stand
  • Ensure good air circulation around the helmet
  • Leave the visor open or removed while drying
  • Dry the inner linings separately, preferably flat
  • For dual pane visors: allow to dry thoroughly to prevent moisture between the layers.

What NOT to do:

  • Never dry in direct sunlight (damages materials and coatings)
  • Never use a hairdryer or other heat source (it will deform the helmet and may damage dual pane visors)
  • Never place on a radiator
  • Do not store in a closed space such as a helmet bag until everything is completely dry.

Step 4: Storage

Only store your helmet in a helmet bag or cover when everything is completely dry. Moisture in a closed space can lead to mold and unpleasant odors. Also regularly check your anti-condensation system (Pinlock, dual pane, or coating) for wear and tear and replace it in time for optimal performance.

Which system suits you?

The choice of an anti-fog system depends on your helmet and personal preference:

  • Pinlock: Ideal if your helmet is Pinlock-ready (many LS2 and MT Helmet models). Affordable and replaceable.
  • Dual pane: Perfect choice for Arai helmets and those who want an integrated solution without loose parts.
  • Anti-condensation coating: Good for recreational use and less extreme conditions, but does require careful maintenance.
  • Anti-fog spray: Good supplement or temporary solution, but must be reapplied regularly.
  • Combination: For optimal results, combine a dual pane or Pinlock with good ventilation, a balaclava, and possibly a water-repellent treatment on the outside.

Extra tips for optimal visibility in the rain

  • Take a spare sight with you: Consider a clear visor as a backup for changing weather. It also never hurts to have spare screws with you in case you lose one.
  • Regular replacement: Replace your visor if it is scratched, as these worsen visibility problems in the rain.
  • Pre-race check: Before each session, check that your visor and/or anti-fog system is correctly installed and clean.
  • Microfiber cloth: Always carry a clean microfiber cloth with you to clean your visor between sessions
  • Preventive maintenance: Clean your visor and anti-fog system regularly, even if you have not ridden in the rain
  • Correct products: Invest in helmet-specific cleaning products to avoid damaging your anti-fog systems
  • Inside and outside: Remember to maintain both the inside and outside of your visor for optimal visibility

In other words, preparation is everything

Karting in the rain doesn't have to be a nightmare if you're well prepared. A combination of a high-quality karting helmet A good ventilation system, the right anti-fog system for your helmet (Pinlock, dual pane, or anti-fog coating), a suitable balaclava, and proper maintenance will ensure clear visibility at all times. Also, don't forget the difference between anti-fog treatment for the interior and water-repellent treatment for the exterior – both contribute to optimal visibility in wet conditions.
